Learn more about John's athletic feats and why he loves working at ICT.
Where are you originally from?
I grew up in Victoria, British Columbia in Canada. I’ve had the opportunity to live and work in 12 twelve different cities including New York, London, Toronto and Vancouver.
What does a typical day at ICT look like for you?
My official title is Director of Finance, but I also manage a number of functions including business development, HR, and investor relations.
Working in a technology startup is both exhilarating and exhausting. No two days are ever the same which means you must be on your A-game constantly.
I start my morning by checking and responding to emails from prospective investors and new customer leads that require my immediate attention. I then hop into team meetings to discuss projects we’re currently bidding on to review requirements and timelines. Around noon, I’ll try to go for a run if the weather is nice. After my run, I’ll eat lunch at my desk and prioritize the rest of my afternoon.
At any given moment, I can be on a due diligence call with an investor, updating our cap table, interviewing candidates, reviewing legal documents and contracts and managing accounts receivables and accounts payables.
What are some of your favorite non-startup things to do?
I’m an endurance sports junkie and have completed 2 Ironman distance triathlons and 3 half Ironman triathlons. I’ve also ran a half dozen marathons and finished two 50 mile ultra-marathons.
Impressive! What is your favorite thing about working at ICT?
What I enjoy the most about working at ICT is the scale of the impact our mission can have on expanding humanity’s reach to outer space. If you had told me ten years ago that I would be working with a space tech startup that enables rockets and spacecraft to explore the deep reaches of space I would have utterly laughed!
